Ethlyn Alvira Scott, Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA. Friday, September 11, 2020 ---The Afro Caribbean Diaspora in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is mourning the passing of beloved centurian Ethlyn Scott, mother to a number of children, including Justin Scott (Florida), and mother-in-law to Dennis Hinkson aka Gabby, well-known photographer in the city.

Mama Scott’s death at age 106 years, on Friday, August 28, came as a surprise to many, including Barbara Wilson, head of the Caribbean Festival Organization who remember her as a hard worker in the community in her better days.

Ethlyn Alvira Scott was born to the late Ethel Gaynor and the late Augusta Sinclair in Kingston, Jamaica on March 12, 1914. Ethlyn was the last surviving sibling of seven children. Ethlyn attended Whitfield Primary School in Kingston, Jamaica. She went on to become an exceptional seamstress. Ethelyn was a member of the Mizpah Mutual Relief Association.

In March of 1967, she migrated to the United States to start a new life for her and her family of nine children (six boys, three girls). She was a hard-working woman. After working several jobs, she landed a permanent job at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital where she retired at the age of sixty-five.

Ethlyn always enjoyed attending social events with family where she would find time to entertain us with some of her latest dance moves. Along with dancing, she also enjoyed singing. She never passed up the opportunity to sing at any event. Some of her hobbies were playing dominoes and board games with her family. She also enjoyed walking.

Watching wrestling was her favorite pastime. Mama Scott’s welcoming and strong personality was loved by everyone.

Ethlyn leaves to cherish fond memories: five sons, Aston, Albert, Justin, Oliver, and Leroy; three daughters, Lorraine, Maria, and Pauline and an adopted daughter, Beverly; three sons-in-law, Leslie, Dennis, and Rupert, two daughters-in-law; Jacqui and Julie; Sister-in-law Hyacinth; twenty-eight grandchildren; fifty-eight great-grand-children; fifteen great-great-grand-children; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of relatives and friends.

RIP, Mama Scott!
