The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) was returned to office in last Thursday’s general election, with a landslide victory that People's National Party (PNP) vice-president and campaign co-director Phillip Paulwell described as “shocking”.

The JLP won 48 seats to the PNP’s 15. Significant losses by the PNP included; Peter Bunting in Manchester Central, Wykeham McNeill in Westmoreland Western and Fenton Ferguson in St Thomas Eastern.

The swearing in ceremony for Prime Minister Andrew Holness was set for Monday, September 7.

President of the People's National Party (PNP) and Opposition Leader, Dr Peter Phillips has given the party hierarchy notice that he is stepping down.

Dr Phillips submitted his resignation letter to the party's chairman Fitz Jackson and told reporters in a media briefing last Thursday, that it was the right thing to do, following the party’s crushing defeat at the polls.

Dr. Phillips said the party has many lessons to learn from the defeat. It is unclear who will succeed him with Lisa Hanna and Julian Robinson, the clear front runners.

On Wednesday, a day before the election, Jamaica recorded three more COVID deaths, increasing the tally to 27. The Health Ministry said all three had underlying issues. Meanwhile, there were 139 new cases pushing the total to 2,822. The ministry says there are now 1,822 active cases including 11 moderately ill and seven critical.

The parish by parish breakdown shows, Kingston and St Andrew – 44, St Catherine – 44, St Thomas – 19, Manchester – 13, St Ann – 6, St Mary – 4, Portland – 4, St James – 3, Trelawny – 1, Clarendon – 1.

The US dollar on Friday, September 4, ended trading at J$147.42 down by 39 cents, according to the Bank of Jamaica's daily exchange trading summary. 

Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar ended trading at J$111.18, down from J$113.06, while the British pound sterling ended trading at J$197.27, down from J$199.78.

Guyana

In Guyana, the Ministry of Health has confirmed the deaths of two more persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), taking the country’s death toll to 46.

The ministry noted that samples were collected from both at the time of admission and were tested positive for COVID-19.

It also said officials have started contact tracing and rapid assistance to everyone who may have been exposed to the now-dead persons.

Trinidad & Tobago

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre is reporting that a 5.5 magnitude earthquake was felt in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday. 

The earthquake was located 64 km WNW of the capital, Port of Spain and happened around 8:57 pm (T&T local time). There were no reports of damage.

St. Lucia

Opposition legislator Dr. Ernest Hilaire is taking St. Lucia Prime Minister Allan Chastanet to court for defamation of character regarding the purchase of two vehicles while he served as the island's High Commissioner in the United Kingdom.

In a statement issued earlier this week, the Office of the Prime Minister said it was duty bound to make public the situation regarding the purchases of the vehicles while Hillarie served as the island's High Commissioner until October 2015 under the previous St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government.

The statement gave a lengthy detail of the matter based on what it said were “facts, as disclosed by correspondence and official documents”.

Shimron Hetmyer, Imran Tahir and Nicholas Pooran show the way as the Guyana Amazon Warriors challenge for a spot in the finals of the Hero CPL T20 Cricket tournament being played in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors sit in the number 2 spot behind leaders and defending champions Trinidad Knight Riders. St. Lucia is at number 3 and Jamaica at number 4.

Spain held on for a 1-1 draw with Germany on Thursday (September 3) in an exciting start to the UEFA Nations League, and reports are that embattled Argentine international, Lionel Messi, will be staying at Barcelona for the time being.
