NEW YORK, NY. Thursday, July 30, 2020 --- Like all Jamaicans are doing at this time, Derick “Ringo” Adamson has more than 58 reasons to celebrate. Not being able to be on the track, or gliding over some rugged terrain, going ‘cross country’, he will take his celebration to the airwaves of the Wee Radio Network, on Tuesday, August 4, to share his impressive resume with listeners of the ‘total sports’ program, for one hour.

Adamson completed his 14th year as the head coach for women’s cross country and track & field at Rowan University in 2020. He has led his teams to numerous New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships during his tenure, with seven in cross country and a total of 22 combined for indoor and outdoor track.

The former Olympian and All-American has earned NJAC Coach of the Year honors in cross country and track & field a total of 15 times, while he has coached numerous All-America, All-Region and All-Conference selections.

His 2019 Rowan cross country team won the NJAC title, marking the school’s first since 2012. The Profs also captured the conference’s outdoor track & field championship in 2019, but lost their chance to defend that title in 2020 when the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adamson was a standout for the Profs’ cross country and track & field teams from 1978 to 1982, receiving All-Conference honors four times. He competed in the steeplechase and distance events, including the 800 and 10,000 meters, and was the 1980 NCAA champion in the steeplechase while earning All-America honors. He graduated from Rowan in 1983 with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education and then received his master’s degree in education administration from Grand Canyon University in 2009.

He was a member of Jamaica’s team at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic games, competing in the marathon. He had also qualified for the 1980 Olympics in the steeplechase but was not added to the team’s roster.

Adamson had a very successful high school coaching career as he led Woodrow Wilson High School (Camden, NJ) to two South Jersey Group III State team championships in cross country and two in outdoor track. His program won the 2006 Indoor National Championship in the shuttle hurdles and also took first place at the Group III State Indoor Relay Championships four times.

Adamson is a three-time winner of the Philadelphia Marathon and seven-time Jamaican cross country champion. In 1990, Adamson was inducted into the Rowan-Glassboro State Athletic Hall of Fame, while he is also a member of the NCAA Division III Track and Field Hall of Fame (2004) and the South Jersey Track and Field Hall of Fame (2017).

Second Base, the all-sports program catering to a Jamaican/Caribbean clientele, airs on the Wee Radio Network, at; www.weeradioonline.com, Tuesdays, at 7 – 8 pm, and is hosted by Dale Brown and Aubrey Campbell.
