 Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico last Thursday reported 485 new cases of the coronavirus, but officials say 355 of those correspond to April and early May and had not been shared with the government until now.

The announcement drew criticism from many who say the government lifted a two-month lockdown without taking into account those cases for which samples were taken as far back as March 31.

It was not immediately clear why the 355 cases were not identified earlier. The US territory has reported a total of more than 4,500 COVID-19 cases and at least 140 deaths.

United States Ambassador to Jamaica, Donald Tapia, says it could be another six weeks before the consular section at the embassy in St. Andrew is reopened to the public for the processing of visa applications.

Tapia explained that the embassy has been 30 percent operational because the second case of COVID-19 in Jamaica was linked to the consular section which has since been cleaned by a team flown in from Washington, DC.
Tapia said the embassy is being reopened in phases. Currently, about 50 percent of the embassy’s staff is working from home.
